Professions and professionalism in the 21st century: meanings, challenges and prospects (Lancaster University)
This launch event for the seminar series (which took place on January 6th 2009 at Lancaster University) identified a number of key debates that will be explored in more detail through subsequent seminars. In particular the event focussed on developing a broad evaluation of recent changes in the structures, norms and practices of the professions. Papers explored topics from academic, practitioner and regulatory perspectives with speakers examining:

definitional issues associated with the title profession and professional;

regulatory issues and broader developments in the political economy of the professions

consumer-professions relationships and the impact of ‘professional status’ on the quality of services
